Update from the Link Room Part IV ….
One of the more interesting items in the Electronic Warfare display is the Transmitter/Receiver 1621 otherwise Carpet II or Carpet Sweeper.
TR 1621 was designed to jam the German Wurzburg radar used to control night fighters without needing a skilled operator.
The receiver portion tuned across the frequency band and if it found a signal, transmitted noise for a preset time. It then moved on to look for another signal. The break prevented enemy night fighters from homing on the transmission. For the early 1940`s this was a very complex system.
A headphone output of the received signal was provided to allow monitoring if allied systems began to use this frequency band.
One set achieved little but several distributed amongst the bomber stream could cause havoc with simple radars.
