Junior Engineering Day 10th April 2018 .. Book a place now ..
It’s the Easter Holidays, the children are off for two whole weeks. Easter itself is nearly over. What on earth are we going to do with them for all that time. A common refrain no doubt, but one that the museum can help with.
On Tuesday 10th April we have our Junior Engineering day where those aged 6-10 can try their hand at craft activities and those aged 11-14 at various engineering and other practical skills. Available to the Junior Engineers are:
- Metalwork – Mark up two pieces of aluminium provided for cutting, drilling, bending, and riveting together. Then, metal edges must be filed and sanded to a good finish. You will learn important engineering skills in a full size workshop.
- Woodwork – Measure up and mark out the wood needed, cut and drill it to shape and then assemble your bug box or bird box. You will work in a fully equipped carpenter’s workshop.
- Engine Maintenance – Learn how to strip, and most importantly, re-assemble a four-stroke internal combustion engine
- Electronics – Starting from a kit assemble a flashing LED on Veroboard. You will learn how to follow a circuit diagram, soldering and the types of components used. You will then test your product using an Oscilloscope. In the afternoon, for those that attended the session last year or the morning one, a chance to have a go at a more advanced circuit (note that this assumes that you can read a circuit diagram and solder).
- Electrics – Learn how to wire up a household circuit, then test it.
- Flight Simulation – Learn how to fly a circuit in one of our simulators. Not just a short test flight, but learn how to take off, trim the aeroplane, turn accurately, and most importantly land! Before any pilot is allowed to fly solo they must master the circuit. By the end of the session you will be able to do this.
- Craft – Aimed at a younger audience, 6-10. In the morning design and decorate a keepsake box to put your football medals, jewellery, or anything in. In the afternnon decorate and personalise paper bunting for your bedroom. Create individual flags with the letters of your name and string them together to make your own unique banner… no one else will have one like it !
