Visit to the Museum by RAF Veteran Alec White

Visit to the Museum by RAF Veteran Alec White …

Alec Thomas Claud White, aged 98 of Ridgmont in Beds visited the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum on Monday 13th Aug 2018.  Alex was with his daughter and grandchild.

Alec volunteered for the RAF in 1940 and became a gunner with 207 squadron flying Lancasters mostly in the mid-upper turret but occasionally in the tail. He completed 33 sorties including 6 raids on Berlin and one each on Nuremberg and Wesseling flying mostly from RAF Spilsby.

He was operational over France the night before D-day and remembers seeing the sea full of ships on his return.

He vividly remembers one occasion when they became lost on return and ended up eventually finding a US base in Cornwall and the relief of being given permission to land very short of fuel. He also recalls that breakfast at the US base the next morning was the best of the war.

Alec stays in touch with his pilot, Doug Smith who, aged 100, now lives in New Zealand.

We are honoured to have received a visit from a Veteran like Alec.
