Reopening – Two Diary Dates

Reopening – Some Diary Dates

Reopening the Museum – Some Dates for the Diary …

Readers of the blog will know from an update which we gave on the 7th Aug, that the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum had secured a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to aid in reopening expenses which meant that we are now well underway in the planning and completing the work involved to render us “COVID secure”.

The plans are now in place and the majority of the activities are complete to allow us to meet the National Museums Directors Council guidelines for opening.  We just now need to go through a VOLUNTEER training process (this coming week) to train the volunteers in their new duties and to check the guidelines we have in place. Then a restricted day with museum members only to test the processes, and then we will be ready to open.

Opening Plans

As previously stated, we will open on one day per week, and aim to increase this to two days fairly soon after that.  The plan for opening is as follows:

Please Note the Restrictions and Details for the Various Days

NO ENTRY FOR THE PUBLIC

Training sessions for volunteers.
This is quite important as there are lots of considerations in the strange world that we now inhabit.

NO ENTRY FOR THE PUBLIC

This will be for MUSEUM MEMBERS ONLY.  There will be no admission to the general public.  Entry will be via membership cards only.  Please do not come along on this date unless you are a member.  Non-members will be turned away from the museum.  The reason for this limited number opening is to test out the new procedures and to test that the volunteers are happy to carry out their tasks.

See Restrictions Below

This will be opening for the GENERAL PUBLIC.  Please note that there will be limits on the number of people we can have on-site and limits to the number of people we can have in the enclosed spaces of the main hangar and outlying smaller museum buildings.  It is possible, therefore, that if the numbers peak beyond that which we are allowed, we may have to turn people away.

See Restrictions Below

Restrictions on All Days

For the days above, and for the foreseeable future there will be a different look and feel to the museum as follows:

  • There will be limits to the number of people on-site so that social distancing can be achieved.  There may well be a necessity to turn people away if we become full.

In addition to social distancing:

  • The NAAFI will not be open.  Snacks, ice creams and cold drinks will be available from the shop though.
  • The rooms behind the shop are too small to allow social distancing and as such will not be reopened until requirements around this issue have been solved.
  • Each building will have a limit on the number of people allowed in at any time, and they will all be manned. This includes the main hangar complex, but that has a capacity of over 90.
  • Other outer buildings, Air Sea Rescue, Bomber Command, Royal Observer Corps and 446 Bomb Group, will be open by rotation during the day, dependant on the number of available volunteers.
  • Hands-on exhibits are not allowed, these will be removed or covered. This includes access to aircraft and trying on uniforms and other items.

On the plus side, we have a new exhibit to see, the Phantom Aircraft XV497 is currently being re-assembled and will be on view in the main display area.

Further Updates

Further updates to opening schedules will be published after we see the results of the trial day for members and the open days for the public.
