Flying The Flag …
The recent gales decided to wreak minor havoc with the parts of the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum again, luckily this time not in the form of a fallen tree. Instead, the target was two of our flags. The first one, outside the Air Sea Rescue building, was reasonably simple to repair, the halyard (a rope that holds the flag up) had split near the end. The solution was simple, tie a hook to the end of a long piece of timber, hook the loop, and pull it down. Then tie the flag to the slightly shortened halyard and rehoist it.
The second one was far more complex. In this case, the wire securing the top pulley had worn through (and almost worn through the head of the pulley block). In order to repair this, it was necessary to borrow the tower normally used by the paint team and erect it next to the flag. Then to climb to the top and remove the old wire, drill out the hole and put a new eye bolt in, attach a new pulley block, and thread the halyard through this. Then (simply!) hoist the flag up the repaired assembly.
We now have a full complement of flags flying again.
