Weekly Flier
This latest edition of the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum Online Weekly Flier. This edition continues as before with a look around the museum and an update of the happenings at the museum site. There are some photos and again a look back at some of the video shot in the summer this year by two drone pilots that visited the Museum. At the foot of the blog is some information on how you could help the museum in these difficult financial times if you wish to do so.
Any photos being referenced in the blog are now shown in the Gallery Section.

Open For Four More Dates In 2020
Subject to any last-minute government restrictions that may come into play, the museum is planning to be OPEN on four more days during December. There will be a number of restrictions in place, the rule of six, strict limits on the numbers of people both in the museum grounds and in the various buildings and the main hangar space. These restrictions can be found in our “COVID Situation Page”. The list of dates for the remainder of the year are:
- Sunday 20th December
- Tuesday 29th December
- Wednesday 30th December
- Thursday 31st December
All of these days would see us open from 10 am to 3 pm.
There is no advanced booking required. Simply turn up on the day from 1000 onwards.
Please keep an eye on our Social Media Pages for any changes to the planned dates by clicking on the buttons below.
As mentioned before, sadly we are still not able to reopen the NAAFI café due to the COVD restriction requirement, however drinks and some snacks are available from the shop.
When visitors arrive at the new Visitor Reception Point (VRP), they will be checked in and given a new leaflet which gives the COVID rules and a map of the site showing the buildings and areas in use. Please follow these instructions for both your safety and the safety of the museum volunteers.
After these few December days, we next plan to open again in March, so stay tuned to the blog for the 2021 plans and dates.

From the Chairman
Museum Manager Hiring
For me this week has been taken up almost entirely by the selection process for the new Museum Manager. The trustees are delighted to say that they have selected a candidate and will be making a formal offer very shortly.
The shortlisted candidates each made a presentation to around a dozen volunteers who then had the opportunity to question them. This was followed by a formal interview by a panel of some of the trustees and Jayne Austin, our Suffolk County Council Museum Development Officer.
We saw very different presentations and interviews and felt that each of the candidates would have brought good skills to the role. The panel unanimously agreed on a selected candidate, and we hope that they will accept the role and introduce themselves to the membership in due course.

Weekly Work
- Winter Adair
As Paul started work on Tuesday this previous week, he took a look at the Adair Walk area to make sure things were in order. The photos below show the amount of water that had come up from the River Waveney and the frosty start that it was that day.
- Visitor Reception Point (VRP) Update
The following update and photos below were provided by Michael for inclusion in the blog. Great work by these workshop volunteers.
“On Tuesday of this week, Dave, Ash and Michael remodelled the worktop that came with the “potting shed” to make a suitable work area for the Reception Team. Then Ian and Mike varnished the interior of the building and fitted the worktop.
On Friday, Dave, Ash and Michael constructed and fitted the porch on the front of the VRP, which will provide some shelter for people when they come to the service window. ”

Video Snapshot
This week we have a short video clip of GLOSTER JAVELIN FAW.9R – XH 892. This is composed of a number of videos and stills shot by the two drone pilots that visited together with some still photos taken at the time of the repaint in 2017.
GLOSTER JAVELIN FAW.9R – XH 892
Previously the GLOSTER JAVELIN FAW.9R – XH 892 featured in a number of blog postings. The restoration blog back in September 2017 can be found within the NASAM BLOG site @ Restoration of Javelin XH892 – Part II. Some of the photos from the restoration have been included in the video.

Coming Next Week
- Blogs over Christmas / New Year
Due to the time of year, the number of Volunteers at the Museum diminishes (apart from those who are attending the four dates that we are open in late December). It is therefore expected that the number of photos and articles sent in to the editor, for publication, will be fewer. The dates that the blog will be published will therefore vary for the next few weeks until we get back into a routine in the New Year.
When a blog is published, it will be notified in the usual way via the following ways:
- email to those people that have subscribed – To subscribe, go to Subscribe to Email Notifications Page
- On the Museum Official Twitter Feed which can be found at @FlixtonMuseum
- On the Museum Official Facebook Page which can be found at @NASAMFlixton
And on the following Facebook sites who generously allow me to post on their pages, thus increasing our visibility to the aviation enthusiasts, museum enthusiasts and residents and throughout East Anglia.
- On the Facebook Page of Suffolk Aviation – Past & Present
- On the Facebook Page of Flixton – Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum
If you are an administrator or moderator of other local Aviation Facebook pages and would like to see the blog link posted there, please let me know and I will see what I can do.
