Painters Update

From Barry:

28/09/21 – The 56 Squadron ‘Meatbox’ is finished (well, almost)!

Yes folks, a bit of a landmark week. After finishing the silver topcoat last week, Mark, Ian and Barry set about the colour detailing on the Meteor. The engine covers were refreshed in red. The tyres were blacked up (see pic). The antennae were given a fresh coat of yellow and Ian decided to paint himself yellow in the process too (see pic, is that Adam Ant? – Ed.)! The Foothold cockpit entry guides were reinstated in black. Red warning triangles were then applied in respect of the ejection seat (see port side profile pic). Job done! Except for the application of the main decals, which are coming from EPS Transfers (Halesworth) (Meteor Refurb 34 thru 36).

Meanwhile, over on the Mystere, having refreshed the detailing on the starboard side last week, Gwen turned her attention to the port side roundels and stripes (see pic) (Mystere Refurb 02).

At lunchtime, the Paint Team discussed what the next ‘resto’ should be? It was agreed with The Boss (Cliff) that the Whirlwind was top priority. The boys hoped that if the weather plays nicely that they could at least start some of the prep work during October; before outside activity ceases for the year.

At end of the day, Ian and Barry retired to the main hangar for a well deserved cuppa and to ruminate on whether they had enough petrol left to get home! Mark had the foresight to conserve supplies and he came on his bike this week. This seemed like a good move until the heavens opened about 5 minutes after he set off for home. Next week we understand he’ll be competing in the All South Elmham Bog Snorkelling championships as a drier alternative pursuit!

05/10/21 – Back to the grind!

The weather didn’t look promising upon opening the curtains around 7am to find a downpour of monsoon proportions taking place over Ipswich. But we shall never surrender (to the weather)! By the time the Paint Team arrived on site the rain had stopped and the skies had cleared. Having endured ‘soggy doggy’ walkies at around 7:30am, Gwen understandably decided to take the day off. Barry tipped up an hour late after a detour to Halesworth to finalise the Meteor decal drawings with EPS Transfers. If the weather plays nicely, the Meteor decals should be fitted w/c 11th October.

In the meantime, those of slightly greater resolve pressed on with the start of the next paint job – the Whirlwind!

With the F100 and Meteor looking sharp following recent ‘restos’ and the Mystere and T33 markings having been ‘tickled’, the Whirlwind is now looking particularly shabby and frankly letting the side down in the bottom field. So, Mark, Ian and Barry started the prepping of the Whirly Bird on the port side (see pics). The plan is to at least have a first pass of sanding and grinding this side of Winter in order get ahead of the game as it were, before the Spring (Whirlwind Repaint 01 thru 03).

For a bit of light relief over lunch the boys moved the recently painted Auster wings out of the B&P Hangar and into the Metal Workshop, ready for the decals to be fitted (also by EPS).

Although a little thin on the ground this edition as far as updates go, my thanks to Steve and  Barry for sending in updates.
