Another Year at the Museum

It seems crazy that another year is drawing to an end and that Christmas is just around the corner. The volunteers recently got together for our Christmas meal, in many ways it felt like it was only a small part way through the year.

It’s been a year of many different aspects. In many ways, life at the museum has gone on as it has for many years; in others, it has been a year of great change.

Sadly, the year saw us lose too many regular volunteers from both past and present. We thank each of them for their considerable contributions, and our thoughts are with their friends and family at this time.

The museum has been fortunate to recruit around a dozen new volunteers during the year, we welcome them to “The Gang” and look forward to being joined by more in the future.

The year saw us charging admission for the first time in the museum’s history. Whilst visitor numbers were down, the change has been healthy for the museum’s finances and put us in a better position to face any challenges that the future might hold.

Several displays have been worked on over the year, the transformation in the Air Sea Rescue and Anderson shelter areas are both very noticeable. Other areas have been tidied up and developed, not as much impact but all are making the museum a more open place, showing off the exhibits to greater effect.

The major change was the arrival of the Jaguar and the departure of the Sea Harrier. It was sad to see the Sea Harrier return to the Imperial War Museum on completion of its loan to us. At the same time, it was good to receive in return the Jaguar, which was gifted by IWM rather than being on loan. It represents an aircraft that was a large part of the aviation scene for over 30 years whilst it was based at nearby RAF Coltishall.

Our plans for expansion of the facilities have progressed slowly; I never cease to be surprised by how slowly these things move.

We continue to receive extremely positive feedback from visitors, be that in person during the visit or afterwards on Tripadvisor, Google and similar.

We wish all our readers goodwill for the festive season, a happy and prosperous new year and look forward to them visiting in the year ahead.

Volunteers Christmas Meal

On Friday, 12th December, 57 volunteers and partners enjoyed a delicious Christmas meal at The Black Swan in Homersfield, about two miles from the museum.

A couple of the numbers mistakenly turned up at a different Black Swan but managed to find us before the meal started.

Opening after Christmas

As mentioned in the last blog, although not strictly an event day or days, it is worth noting that we will be open for two days in December. On Monday, the 29th of December, and Tuesday, the 30th of December 2025, the Museum will be open from 10:00 until 15:00 each day.

There will be several volunteers available to answer questions and provide guided tours of the workshops and other areas, including flight simulators and open cockpits.   With the NAAFI Café open for hot and cold drinks, plus snacks, this is a great family day out.

Reopening in 2026

Following the winter maintenance period, the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum will reopen its doors on Wednesday, the 18th of February 2026.  On normal weeks, the Museum will be open every Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and all Bank Holiday Mondays until further notice.  The opening times will be as in the previous year, from 1000 through to 1600.

It is worth jotting down in the diary that the Museum Manager has already pencilled in a number of dates for events that we usually hold at the Museum.  These dates are shown below.

Funding

We are a charitable organisation, relying now on admission charges, grants and donations from the people that visit.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated and enables the Museum to continue in our mission “To conserve, preserve, and promote the history of aviation in East Anglia, whilst providing a fun, family-friendly and interactive museum, promoting education and remembrance of the events of the past”.

Would you like to help??

One of the ways we save money is by having a dedicated group of volunteers who keep the Museum and its exhibits both manned and maintained.  We hope, that a few people would consider helping in any the three ways below:

Help by becoming a Museum Member, volunteering to help at the Museum, or by making a Donation to help with our running costs.  To learn more about these three methods of assistance, please click the corresponding button below to access the relevant information.
