Flixton Aviation Museum On Tour …
On Friday 25th May the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum went on tour. Three volunteers took a range of artefacts to the 2nd Air Division Memorial Library in Norwich.
They were presenting to a reminiscence event organized by the library.
They took gas masks of various types, a gas rattle and various pieces of pilot equipment. They presented a brief history of the museum and the way that it presents both the Second World War and the Cold War.
They then talked about the education programme and how school visits enjoy learning about various aspects of the way that the Second World War impacted on local history.
After this, the floor was opened to guests to relate their stories if they wished. Several of the guests had been in Norwich during the war and one related a tale of the day that Woolworths was bombed. It seemed that the sky had rained sweets at the time and the local youngsters filled their pockets. One found a baby rabbit and persuaded their parents to look after it. Their father built a hutch, and the rabbit grew and grew, in fact, it turned out to be a hare!
After this, refreshments were served, and the guests were able to try on the various items and talk to the volunteers and each other. One young family particularly enjoyed trying on the gas masks although they did admit that they wouldn’t like to have had to do so for real.
