Thornycroft Foam Tender – FOR SALE

FOR SALE – Thornycroft Foam Tender

The following item is for sale at the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum:

Thornycroft Nubian Pyrene Mk202 Foam Tender

Reg. No.: VYO417G/ J2522 (Jersey)/ Q368KEW

Surplus to the Museum requirements, and not in keeping with the rest of the Museum exhibits, the Thornycroft Foam Tender is currently stored outside and is being disposed of as seen, in an “as is” condition.  Moving this vehicle will require some considerable effort, and it will need to be transported on a substantial trailer/low loader.  The engine currently will not start.

The space being taken up by the Tender is earmarked for a new Educational Centre and the monies recovered from the sale will be used as part of that project to help fund the building for use by visiting schoolchildren and groups.

Further information and photographs can be obtained by sending an email to ……  bloginfo@aviationmuseum.net

Price:  Terms are negotiable depending on the status of the buyer with preference being given to accredited museums and the vehicle could be gifted to them.

Details of the Foam Tender:

We think the Tender was built by Thornycroft between 1964-1968 and was once fitted with a 3-ton dry powder unit – also used for light water demonstrations for the MOD, and as a Pyrene demonstrator.

It has a Rolls-Royce engine, and the bodywork was originally painted red. This machine is thought to have been trialled by the RAF as a replacement for the Mk.6 but not adopted.  It was at Filton during the Concorde maiden and test flights and may have been at Farnborough.

The Tender then went to Jersey Airport Fire Service – painted yellow – as J2522 with call-sign “Crash 66” in October 1969 and served there until donated to IWM Duxford in March 1984. The tender was then donated to Flixton by the Norfolk Fire Museum following storage at Bressingham.

  1. Not yet opened as a museum but plan to after building renovations have concluded.
Ed just happen to have a 4 bay RAF Fire Section capable of housing such a machine and the tech skills to refurbish her.
Please could you contact West Raynham Control Tower on FB to give us an idea of the sum you seek.
