Busy Two Days

Busy Two Days

Busy Two Days @ NASAM …

The Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum had a busy two days towards the end of last week.  Organisations and people sensing a “getting back to normal” requested permission for special visits to the Museum.  Two of those requests materialised in the nephew of a WWII airman requesting to see something of what his uncle had experienced in the area whilst stationed here, and an unusual request for an organisation to train their sniffer dogs.

With more visits to come, The two visits mentioned are detailed below.

In Memory Of …

On Friday 28th August we received a visit from Christopher Varner, nephew of James Kirk Varner, Flight Engineer of the 446th Bomb Group, who served with the 446 Bomb Group during the Second World War. The museum has a lot of 446BG memorabilia in a building dedicated to the history of the group. In addition, we have a bench which was presented in memory of Kirk.

Museum member Alison Curtis, who has regularly attended 446 Bomb Group reunions, took Christopher around the airfield site and a few buildings that still remain which have murals created by servicemen during the war.  Images from the visit are below.

Note:  More information on the unveiling of the seat dedicated to Kirk Varner can be found on the blog detailing when a memorial was dedicated to the Bungay airfield.  This can be found in a previous blog @ Bungay Airfield Memorial Unveiling

Sniffer Dogs @ NASAM …

On Saturday 29th August the museum played host to a sniffer dog training group. The group, Mantrailing, used the museum grounds to set trails for the dogs to follow. The dogs came in all shapes and sizes and followed the trails laid with varying degrees of success.

The group uses various different sites but said that the museum was an ideal location due to the varied settings.  Some images from the visit are shown below.

Thank you Alison for helping my cousin Christopher Varner see the facility.
I am Kirk Varner’s daughter and I hope to be able to visit someday.
Thanks for your support of the American crew.
