Flying the Flag – Part Two

446 Bomb Group Memorial – Library Picture

The recent gales which took down two of our flags and which received a mention in the blog @ Flying The Flag    also did more damage which we didn’t notice until this week. One of our volunteers went to the memorial at the airfield to make sure that it was neat and tidy ready for Remembrance / Armistice. The grounds were sorted out, but the flag was damaged beyond repair. A new flag was purchased, it was decided to hoist it until after Remembrance Day, then bring it in for the winter.

Unfortunately, nothing is quite as simple as that, so when this was tried yet another halyard was stuck at the top of the pole. After fetching a bamboo “fishing rod” and muttering at the wind for blowing it about, we were able to hook the halyard and bring it down. The new flag is now proudly flying for the next few weeks.

Canine Capers

Canine lifestyles came to the museum for their third visit on Saturday 24th to undertake some “mantrailing”, following a scent trail. Previous visits have seen more experienced dogs taking part, but all of those present this time were first-timers. They still seemed to us to have innate skills in sniffing out the trails laid for them to follow.

We are becoming a regular venue for them with another booking in two weeks time.

When you have them present you mustn’t pick up things that you think they have dropped, it’s probably the scent sample. Our chairman was asked quickly not to touch a mask that looked as if it had been dropped, whoops!

NASAM “Guardroom”

The concrete pad for the new entry “guardroom” (converted potting shed) has now been laid. The shed has been delivered and will (weather permitting) be erected next week.

The building will provide the first point of contact with visitors and allow us to provide useful information as they arrive. Watch this space for further progress.

Coming Up Next Week

Super Sabre Repaint

Super Sabre Renovation

During the renovation of the North American F-100D Super Sabre as reported in the blog @  Painters Update, one of the Volunteer Paint Team, Barry Jones, kept a photographic record of the various days that the team worked on the project.  Those photos are now being stitched together to produce a five minute video record of the work carried out.  That video will be blogged next week and also put on our YouTube Channel.
