Online Weekly Flier – 06/11/20

Update from NASAM as at 06 Nov 20 …

Weekly Flier

Firstly, an apology from last week.  Due to issues with the publishing software, two sets of emails were sent out to those people who are notified of new blogs in this way.  The problem has been rectified so; hopefully, only one email will be sent when I hit the “Publish” button today.

This is the second edition of the Weekly Flier, a selection of things that have happened over the last week or two at the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum and snippets of information about events etc.  Last weeks edition seemed to go down well with some of our readers so we will continue with this format for a while. Other blogs, such as the temporary closure, containing more substantial information will continue to be posted from time to time.

Museum Closure

As you may have seen from our blog on Monday this week, due to the COVID situation and the national lockdown that will be in force from 5th November onwards, the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum has decided that we will once again, temporarily, close our doors.  As from Monday 2nd Nov 2020, we are CLOSED to the public until further notice.

The museum committee will be meeting regularly to discuss the COVID situation.  We will advise the public of the outcome of these discussions as they affect the OPEN and CLOSED dates, and try to keep you updated via this blog and our Social Media pages.

NAAFI Update

Whilst the museum can not currently open due to the COVID regulations, it is expected that when we are given the green light to resume openings, the NAAFI café will still be subject to the restrictions that it will be table service only.   We are therefore planning towards a time when we can reopen with the NAAFI table service in place.

One of the requirements is that the café area is separated from the general museum area (as you may have seen in supermarkets where the café areas are now screened off). To this end, our carpenters have created three screens that will be used to create this separation.

The museum has a large amount of aviation art in-store, and these screens will double as a means of displaying some of this art. Once finished, the screens will be deployed, and the art displayed. This should be very soon, so watch this space for details of when we are to reopen and when you can come along and view some items that have been in store for a very long time.

The material for these screens was funded by part of the generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Emergency Fund and built by our own volunteers.

Thunder and the Wall

An unusual visitor to the museum, on Saturday 31st Oct, was the pilot of our Thunder Hit air balloon for its flight over the Berlin wall in 1983. John Sprange was an employee of Green Peace at the time and was arrested by the STASI after the flight, the balloon being interned for three years by the East German authorities.

Two members of a film crew were with John, and they were planning to film a documentary about that and other flights.

As we often say, watch this space

Visibility

When we next open, visitors will notice that the front of house staff now have uniform high visibility tabards to identify them to visitors. Several colours were available, and different people had different ideas as to which we should have. For almost everyone blue was the second choice though…

Trick or Treat

With door to door trick or treat cancelled this year the museum had some scary visitors. These two, who live locally, were determined to give their costumes an outing.

Super Sabre Repaint

As mentioned last week, during the renovation of the North American F-100D Super Sabre, one of the Volunteer Paint Team, Barry Jones, kept a photographic record of the various days that the team worked on the project.  Those photos have now been stitched together to produce a five-minute video record of the work carried out.

The full 5-minute version can be found on our YouTube channel at this location Super Sabre Repaint

A shorter, taster, version of that video is below.

Canberra Repaint

Given a fair wind and some time, it is hoped to stitch together another set of pictures sent in by Barry Jones who documented the Canberra repaint in 2019.

This again will be put onto the YouTube channel once it has been completed.  The NASAM YouTube Channel can be found at
